This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Malawi’s independence. This iconic cultural event is scheduled to take place from September 6 to 8, 2024, at the Fish Eagle Bay Lodge on the shores of Lake Malawi. The festival will showcase a vibrant array of talented artists from Malawi and across the globe.
Since its inception in 2004, the festival has consistently drawn positive attention to Malawi from international media. It has played a crucial role in presenting Malawian artists on a global platform, promoting cultural exchanges and highlighting their artistic contributions.
“Since the directive of the Ministry of Tourism in 2007 to enable various regions of the lake to benefit from festival tourism, Lake of Stars has been held across the lakeshore districts in ever changing venues and 2024 brings attention to a brand new site. The festival attracted up to 6,000 patrons and generated up to USD 1.8 Million in gross revenues for both the festival and related businesses like the tourism and travel industries. The return of the flagship arts festival is thrilling .” stated Director of Arts, Humphrey Mpondaminga.
This year’s festival is especially poignant as it celebrates six decades of Malawian independence. It aims to be a tribute to the nation’s rich cultural heritage and history. Set in the serene surroundings of Fish Eagle Bay Lodge, known for its commitment to eco-friendly practices, the festival offers a unique blend of cultural immersion, environmental consciousness, and relaxation. The natural beauty of the area enhances the festival experience, providing a perfect backdrop for enjoying music and culture.
“We’re delighted to announce that Fish Eagle Bay Lodge in Nkhotakota will be the home of Lake of Stars this year,” said Sharmila Elias, Head of Projects & Productions. “In the wake of adversities, the festival is positioning itself in response to a district that has not hosted the international arts festival of Malawi before. It’s time! The ethos of boosting tourism, sharing our rich heritage, sustainability and environmental stewardship embodied by the eco lodge and the district aligns perfectly with our festival’s values, and we can’t wait to share this incredible setting with our attendees.”
